Here Are 10 Tips for a Happy Home & Safe Summer
June does more than just usher in the summer season. It also serves as a reminder for homeowners to check in on the health of their homes. That’s right. June is National Healthy Homes month, which was created by the Office of Lead Hazard Control and Healthy Homes to bring awareness about health-related home hazards. Whether you’ve recently purchased your home or are a veteran homeowner, it’s always important to treat your favorite place with the utmost care.
At Miller’s, we’re 100% on board with helping local residents care for their homes this month—and every month! And we’d like to share our professional tips on keeping your home safe and healthy this season. After all, we’re more than just Hampton Roads’ leader in AC repair. We’re the HVAC family that has been taking care of area residents for more than 40 years. And this makes us family! So, from our family to yours, here are 10 tips for achieving a happy home.
1. Alarms
Check that all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are functioning properly. Test them using the button on each device. If they sound weak or don’t trigger the alarm, replace the batteries.
2. Electrical panels
Be sure your electrical panel is up to code. This is an especially important task for new homeowners who might not be familiar with the panel. If you have questions, call an electrician to inspect your electrical wiring.
3. AC window units
Got window AC units? Be sure they are secured tightly in the window. Also, do not use extension cords (a major tripping hazard) and be sure they have their own outlet. Lastly, keep them far away from water sources.
4. Air filters
Do a summer check of your air filters. Even if you’ve replaced them in the spring, it’s never a bad idea to do another check. Since air conditioners run so often in the summer, they work extra hard—which means your filters work harder, too.
5. HVAC system maintenance
Keep your system running smoothly 365 days a year by getting professional maintenance each and every season. It’s the most efficient way to save money and energy. Call Miller’s today for yours.
6. Little ones
Young children are often curious. Remind them to steer clear of outdoor AC units and avoid any temptation to stick toys inside them. (Yes, this actually happens.)
7. Safety manuals
If you come across questions regarding your HVAC system, don’t just wing it. Check your owner’s manual for proper procedures. If you’re still having trouble, call Miller’s for professional help.
8. Vents
Be sure your return vents are free from blockages and furniture is not impeding airflow.
9. Power sources
This might be a no-brainer, but it’s always a good reminder: Disconnect power when performing major work on your AC or other systems powered by electricity.
10. Sunscreen
While this tip isn’t directly related to your home’s safety, it will keep you more comfy when you return home! After all, the Virginia sun can be relentless. So don’t forget to lather on your sunscreen before you head out the door. Whether you’re headed to the beach, pool or off to play a game of tennis, sunscreen is always a summer must-have.
