Our Tips Will Conserve Water, Too!
In the time of coronavirus, many homeowners have found themselves working from home. While this change can be helpful in reducing your car’s mileage and the amount of money you spend on gas, it can also put extra wear and tear on your family’s home. This is especially true if two household members are working at home full-time. No longer are you relying on your company’s facilities for eight hours a day. Instead you’re using more water—at home— than ever! With washing more dishes, flushing toilets more frequently, drinking more water and taking extra showers, you’re definitely squeezing more out of your home’s plumbing system than you did before.
So, what’s a homeowner to do to conserve water? Good question. There are plenty of tricks that will help! Fortunately, your local plumbing company in Norfolk (that’s us!), has some excellent tips to help you save money as you continue to hunker down.
Try These 5 Tips for Saving H20—and Money!
Summer is no time to drain your wallet. If you’d like to put some extra cash back in your wallet and also preserve your home’s plumbing system, try these tips:
1. Replace old faucets.
What is the condition of your bathroom and kitchen faucets? Don’t forget that your faucet controls the amount of water that passes through it. So, if you have outdated faucets, they could be contributing to water waste and increasing your water bill. Solution? Update to new eco-friendly fixtures that control the amount of water being used. You will save on your water bill and reduce your home’s water flow by up to 30 percent!
2. Check in with your toilet.
This might sound funny, but is your toilet in decent shape? Leaky toilets, running toilets and sticky flappers are just a few of the common problems we see that contribute to excessive water use. If you can’t replace a flapper on your own or pinpoint the location of leaks, call our master plumbers. We promise to find a solution that works.
3. Upgrade your water heater.
Old water heaters can contribute to water loss, too. Inefficient systems can cause odd smells, cold showers, discolored water, noises and even leaks. If your water heater is over 12 years old, it’s probably time to upgrade to a more efficient model.
4. Replace your showerheads.
If you don’t yet have a water-saving showerhead in your home, what are you waiting for? Low-flow showerheads save you both money and water. Plus, they feel great. If every household in the United States switched from a 2.5 gallon per minute (gpm) unit to a 2.0 gpm showerhead, we could save roughly 260 billion gallons of water in the U.S. each year!
5. Check your water meter.
Water meters can alert you when you have a leak. Once you locate your water meter, check the leak indicator to see if it is moving. (The leak indicator is typically a triangular-shaped dial or a small silver wheel.) If the dial/wheel is moving, there’s a good chance you have a leak. Call Miller’s for a fix!
