And Safe & Warm, Too!
’Tis the season for rosy cheeks and chilled fingers, which means it’s also time to appreciate the cozy warmth of a heat-filled home. If you’ve ever experienced a furnace breakdown in the middle of winter, you know what we mean. As homeowners, we rely on our heating systems more than we realize. It’s only when an icy chill enters our home and our systems need a little TLC or professional heating maintenance, that we truly appreciate them.
As you celebrate the joy of the season this month, you’ll want to be sure your home is merry and bright but also safe and warm. Fortunately, this is exactly what Miller’s is good at—sharing heating tricks and safety tips for your home! When you snuggle up by the fire with family to watch those holiday movies, keep these five safety tips in mind.
1. Take care with space heaters and more.
Anything that might be flammable, including space heaters, candles and heated throws, need to be cared for properly. If you use these items during the holidays, be sure to keep space heaters 4 feet from any furniture, monitor candles when burning and unplug heated throws when not in use.
2. Be mindful of heating vents.
Don’t decorate near your vents. Keep wrapping paper, trees (real or fake), lights, boxes, gifts and more far from your air returns. Blocking vents leads to poor airflow and can make your indoor temperatures feel icy and chilly!
3. Don’t decorate the thermostat.
Got little ones who like to help decorate? Be sure they keep garland, lights and wreaths away from the thermostat. While these decorations may look pretty, hanging them over the thermostat produces an inaccurate room temperature reading. This could throw off your comfort and produce chillier indoor temps than you want! Brrr!
4. Ask your guests to use the back door.
If your holiday party is in your front room where the main entrance is, guests who come and go will be opening and closing the door constantly. This just contributes to more cold air indoors. Ask your guests to enter using a back or side door. This will keep the guests in your front room cozy and won’t cool down your hot food items either.
